South Africa’s Malaria-Free Safari Sanctuary Waterberg

The Waterberg is tucked away in South Africa’s far northern reaches, this vast sandstone mountain range straddles South Africa’s Limpopo province (home to Rudyard Kipling’s “great grey-green, greasy Limpopo River”). Here, 150 rugged, malaria-free kilometres of bushveld paradise await those in search of the best African safari tour.

Marakele National Park

At the heart of the Waterberg, the Marakele National Park offers romantically remote Big Five safari tours. Its diverse landscape, from open grasslands to mountains and dramatic valleys, teems with all the big game, as well as herds of kudu, sable, eland, tsessebe and wildebeest.

Not to be outdone, the birdlife is pretty spectacular too. The park attracts the world’s largest colony of Cape Vultures, with up to 800 amorous pairs shaking their tail feathers in the height of the breeding season. And the uplift from the mountains’ cliff faces is the perfect launchpad for raptors to ride the thermals in search of lunch.

Lapalala Wilderness Reserve

Off the charts – and the grid – is another Waterberg favourite. What began as a dream (like most good stories) Lapalala tells an upbeat tale of conservation success, driven by renowned founders and great friends, Clive Walker and Dale Parker.

The first private reserve in South Africa to receive relocated black rhino, it’s flourished over the last forty years into an unparalleled safari tour destination. In addition to its impressive Big Five sightings, the reserve also boasts a growing population of rare roan antelope and a handsome buffalo breeding project.

The Waterberg is all about space, wilderness, and diversity. Compared to Kruger & Greater Kruger, the Kruger offers denser wildlife populations and world-famous sightings, but it’s busier. Waterberg’s charm lies in its uncrowded reserves, mountainous backdrops, and pristine bushveld. With dramatic sandstone cliffs, river valleys, and sprawling savannas, it’s a very different landscape to explore!

The Waterberg is Big Five territory — lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo roam its plains. Beyond that, you’ll find rare species like roan antelope, sable, tsessebe, and black rhino at Lapalala. Then there’s plains game like Kudu, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, and eland. Not to mention it’s a birders’ paradise, and home to the world’s largest colony of Cape Vultures.

Obviously! The region is home to a selection of exclusive private reserves and boutique lodges, many of which focus on conservation and immersive safari experiences. Lapalala Wilderness Reserve is a pioneer in rhino conservation and one of the Waterberg’s most celebrated private reserves. Marakele National Park is remote, wild, and rich in wildlife, with luxury camps scattered across dramatic mountain landscapes.

The dry winter months (May to September) are prime for game viewing. Cooler temperatures and sparse vegetation make wildlife easier to spot, and the light is perfect for photography!

Yes! It’s malaria-free, accessible, and full of family-friendly camps offering kids’ safari programmes, private villas, and shorter, tailored game drives.

Yes — It’s an incredible way to see the Waterberg! See the most untouched and incredible parts of the Waterberg from the skies, and experience the reserve in a completely unique way. Spot game, and look out onto the stunning cliffs of the Waterberg mountain range.

The Waterberg is just a 3 to 4-hour drive from Johannesburg, making it one of South Africa’s most accessible wilderness areas. Alternatively, a private charter can get you there in a flash and land directly at your camp.
