Setting the Scene
Jamala is the kind of place that changes your priorities in minutes. One look at the leadwood forest and elephants crowding the waterhole, and you’re thinking: “Cancel my life, I live here now.” And that’s before you’ve seen the “room” bigger than our Cape Town apartment. They even coined and trademarked the term “sofa safari” — watch wildlife, (drink in hand), without ever having to leave the sofa/pool/spa/bar/dinner deck. But don’t get too comfy, there’s plenty to explore in this massive park.
Madikwe is a 75,000-hectare, malaria-free pachyderm and predator paradise. Thanks to Operation Phoenix (the largest wildlife translocation in history), this once barren farmland is now one of Africa’s greatest conservation triumphs! And as if the setting weren’t enough, this owner-led team is so warm you’ll half expect them to tuck you in at night.
Wildly Stylish Sleeping Arrangements
To sum it up, a “room” here is pretty much the size of a small house… and you’ve only got four neighbours! We can pretty much guarantee that when you see the plunge pool overlooking the elephant highway, you’ll feel quite chuffed with yourself too. If not, locking eyes with an elephant mid-shampoo in the outdoor shower might just do the trick. Inside, it’s free-standing tubs, walk-in dressing rooms, fireplaces, and a four-poster bed perfectly positioned for morning coffee with those ellies. At this stage, leaving feels completely unreasonable.
Food Philosophy
If the wildlife doesn’t keep you here, the food definitely will. Jacques and Nico have mastered the art of the safari feast. From hearty breakfasts to high teas, these spreads will test every ounce of your self-control. As the sun dips, the tempo slows into three-course, candlelit dinners on the deck — think white-glove service without a hint of stuffiness. Each dish (and wine pairing) is a celebration of flavour and flair, and the ribs are so good you’ll genuinely consider eating the bones. Add in a gin tasting overlooking the waterhole, and you’ve got the safari diet of our dreams.
Wild Origins
Beyond the Big Five, plus cheetah and wild dog (that’s the Super Seven, if you’re counting), Madikwe has a party trick few reserves can top: both spotted and brown hyena in the same place, side-eyeing each other like estranged cousins. Set between the Lowveld and the Kalahari, this is the only reserve we know where you can see species from both ecosystems in one game drive — a truly magical overlap. And elephant lovers… well, brace yourselves, there’s more than plenty.
Also…
There’s no wrong way to safari at Jamala. Rise with the sun for twice-daily game drives, stretch your legs on a guided bush walk, or skip the excursions entirely — because the wildlife often comes to you. With the waterhole just metres away, Jamala’s legendary “sofa safari” means you might spot the Big Five without ever leaving your lounger (binoculars optional, bevvies strongly encouraged). Looking for a slow afternoon? The library offers a quiet hideaway with a birds-eye view of the Dwarsberg Mountains. Let’s not forget the spa for blissful unwinding, or the fully equipped gym for those who insist on earning their sundowners. And of course, the boutique for “gifts” that suspiciously never make it home.
