Lelapa

Setting the Scene

On the far eastern edge of Madikwe Game Reserve, you’ll find Lelapa. Rather perfectly, it means “family” in Setswana . And fittingly so, because this camp is unapologetically built for exactly that: generous spaces, clever design, and all the little touches that keep everyone (even teenagers) happy. Add sprawling bush views, a camp that’s oh so le-lovely (mandatory dad joke), and a welcome that lives up to its name — suddenly, family safaris don’t feel like hard work at all.

Wildly Stylish Sleeping Arrangements

The luxury or family suite? Your choice. They’re at opposite ends of camp, because harmony sometimes requires… distance. Each has a private deck, plunge pool, and the inevitable outdoor shower (yay). Bringing kids? Lucky little buggers. The four family suites deliver bunk beds, games, and a nightly hot-chocolate ritual so good it’ll ruin them for normal life.

Food Philosophy

Bush breakfasts worth leaping out of bed for: pancake stations, smoky barbeques, and coffee drifting across the veld. Skip a drive? Breakfast at camp comes with waterhole drama included. Evenings bring starlit bush dinners, smoky boma braais, or private dining for two. Chefs spin local flavours into dishes worth daydreaming about, paired with South Africa’s best wines and cocktails you’ll 100% brag about. Snackers, relax: Amarula coffees, sundowner gins, biltong, and lollies fuel you between drives.

Wild Origins

Here, the lowveld shakes hands with the Kalahari, smooshing two ecosystems (and all their wildlife) into one glorious package: Big Five, cheetah, wild dog, aardwolf, and both hyenas — spotted and brown — awkwardly sharing a waterhole. And birders, bring your apps!

Also…

Game drives are the name of the game. Mornings start with golden light and the bush waking up around you. By sunset, the bar goes mobile and you’re clutching a gin while the horizon catches fire. Then, night falls and the drama unfolds. Prefer walking?  Swap wheels for footprints and learn to read tracks in the sand. Conservation junkies? Roll up your sleeves: microchip a rhino or collar an elephant.

After a day of “exhausting” pool time or world-class sightings, pampering is non-negotiable. Lelapa’s spa delivers with African botanicals and deep-tissue magic. There’s even a cubs’ massage for the kids. (Yes, you’re allowed to be jealous.)

Stuff we love

A safari for the whole family

  • A gym that overlooks the bush so we can watch giraffe walk past whilst on the treadmill!
  • Learning about our solar system and the Milky Way on night drives
  • Pancakes and coffee in the bush! Can’t beat it.
  • The kids’ Eco House — an option to keep the little ones busy while parents adventure!
